Russell Simmons Takes a Polygraph Test & Creates #NotMe Campaign In Response To NYPD Investigating Sexual Assault Claims

Music mogul Russell Simmons has been accused of sexually assaulting and raping multiple women, but is hitting back by starting the #NotMe hashtag.

The New York Police Department has revealed they are looking into allegations Simmons sexually assaulted many women.

Sgt. Brendan Ryan said in a statement, "The NYPD has received information about allegations against Russell Simmons in the New York City area. Our detectives are currently in the process of reviewing the information."

The news of the investigation comes a day after nine different women accused Simmons of varying levels of sexual misconduct in articles published by the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times

Many of these women accused Russell of sexual misconduct, while four others accused him of rape.

An attorney for Simmons issued a statement on Wednesday, saying,  "Russell Simmons fully supports and will cooperate with the police inquiry and is confident of a swift resolution."

Over eleven women have come forward to accuse Simmons of sexual misconduct since November. These women include screenwriter Jenny Lumet, actress Natashia Williams-Blach and fashion publicist Kelly Cutrone.

Many of the women revealed they kept quiet due to Russell's powerful position as a leader in the hip-hop and fashion communities.

Simmons has repeatedly denied these allegations.

He told the New York Times on Thursday, "I vehemently deny all these allegations. These horrific accusations have shocked me to my core and all of my relations have been consensual. The presumption of innocent until proven guilty must not be replaced by 'Guilty by Accusation.'"

Simmons also shared a post to Instagram on Thursday, with the hashtag #NotMe. This is obviously a reference to the hashtag #MeToo, where thousands of women used to share their stories of sexual harassment and assault after the Harvey Weinstein scandal broke.
Today, I begin to properly defend myself. I will prove without any doubt that I am innocent of all rape charges. Today, I will focus on “The Original Sin” (Keri Claussen), the claim that created this insane pile on of my #MeToo. Stay tuned! We’ll share information today... And tomorrow the case of Jenny Lumet. My intention is not to diminish the #MeToo movement in anyway, but instead hold my accusers accountable. #NotMe Again, this is not a movement against or even in conjunction with #Metoo . It’s just a statement about my innocence

Simmons is one of the co-founders of Def Jam Recordings, which produced some of biggest hip-hop hits from major artists. He sold his stake in the company in 1999 for a reported $100 million. He went on to start several other companies, such as Rush Communications.

In late November, Simmons made the decision to step down from the companies he founded after several sex assault accusations. Russell stated he did not want to be a "distraction."
