Report: Mother Charged With Murder After Intentionally Drowning Her 10-Day-Old Infant Son

A 25-year-old woman in Rochester, New York has been arrested for drowning her 10-day-old son in a bathtub. Markiya Mitchell was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of her infant son, Jeremiah.

Mitchell pleaded not guilty in court on Tuesday morning and was remanded to the Monroe County Jail without bail.

Court documents state that Mitchell placed her 10-day-old son in 8 to 10 inches of water in a bathtub inside her apartment. Baby Jeremiah was reportedly submerged in the bath water for one to two hours, court documents show.

An unidentified adult in the home discovered the baby in the bathtub and dialed 911. Police officers responded to Mitchell's Locust Street apartment at around 2:30 p.m. on Monday.

Jeremiah was taken to Rochester General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Mitchell was taken into custody at the scene and interviewed by investigators. Court documents report that Mitchell "admitted to intentionally drowning the baby in the bathtub with the purpose of ending his life."

The felony complaint states, "The defendant being the victim's mother and while in her apartment did intentionally place her infant son, Jeremiah U. Mitchell, into the bathtub which was filled with 8 to 10 inches of bath water for a period of 1 to 2 hours. The defendant by these actions intentionally caused the death of her infant son."

Assistant District Attorney Amanda Balling refused to discuss details due to the ongoing investigation, but revealed the case would be presented to a Monroe County grand jury.

Mitchell does has a criminal record, but police did not reveal her criminal history.

Authorities refused to comment on Mitchell's mental state.

Police revealed that Mitchell is also the mother of a 7-year-old child, who is currently being cared for by a family member. The child was not home at the time of the incident, officers said.

Mitchell is set to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Friday morning. Additional charges against her are pending.
