Report: Mother Says She Drowned Her 3-Month-Old Son & His 5-Year-Old Half-Brother Because She Was Afraid Of Deportation

A Delaware mother has been arrested and charged with drowning her infant son and his half-brother in the bathroom of their home. Kula Pelima, 30, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her three-month-old son and the baby's five-year-old half brother.

The baby, Solomon Epelle, is her biological son, according to police. Alex Epelle, 5, is her boyfriend’s son with another woman.

Pelima called 911 at 3:45 a.m. on Monday saying she was concerned about being deported because the father of the boys had been detained by agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Pelima immigrated to the United States from Liberia at age 10 and is in the country legally.

Federal officials had picked up Pelima’s boyfriend, Victor Epelle, who is from Nigeria, on Oct. 6.

According to the police chief, the officer who responded to Pelima’s first 911 call on Monday had told her they were not going to arrest her. She was given the phone number for a help-line to call for further information.

Pelima called 911 hours later at around 8:30 a.m., allegedly confessing to drowning her son and his half-brother.

She met police officers at the front door of the Wilmington home when they arrived and showed them to a tub where officers found the boys’ bodies.

Pelima explained to police that she took the three-month-old upstairs on Monday, October 16 and dropped him into the tub, then plugged the drain and turned on the water. She left the infant in the bathtub as it filled with water to get the five-year-old boy.

She told authorities she physically assaulted the boy before walking him to the bathroom and holding his head under water until he stopped moving. She killed the five-year-old just a month shy of what would have been his sixth birthday.

A makeshift memorial appeared Tuesday outside the #Wilmington home where Kula Pelima is charged with drowning her 4-month and her 5-year-old sons. Read more on @delawareonline

Pelimia's neighbor, Aunjea Daniels, said she often saw the woman and her children outside their home. "She seemed like a happy parent," she said. "She was usually uplifting. She seemed happy and her children were well-groomed. I would have never thought she would do something like this."

Pelima was arrested at the scene charged with two counts of first-degree murder. She is being held at the Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on a $2 million cash bond.
