Issa was referencing the comments Kanye made during his interview with TMZ last month, where he implied that slavery was "a choice" for African-Americans.

"You hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years?! That sounds like a choice," he said at the time. "You were there for 400 years and it was all of y'all? It’s like we're meant to be in prison. I like the word 'prison' because slavery goes too direct to the idea of blacks… prison is something that unites us as one race."

West later attempted to clarify his remarks on Twitter, writing, "To make myself clear. Of course I know that slaves did not get shackled and put on a boat by free will. My point is for us to have stayed in that position even though the numbers were on our side means that we were mentally enslaved."

"The reason why I brought up the 400 years point is because we can't be mentally imprisoned for another 400 years," he continued in a series of tweets. "We need free thought now. Even the statement was an example of free thought It was just an idea. Once again I am being attacked for presenting new ideas."

Kim recently revealed she went off when she heard her husband's interview with TMZ, also talking about his song "Wouldn't Leave."

Kardashian said, "Did I cry about it? Did I fight about it? Yeah. That’s not stuff we put on social media. I’m not going to start tweeting what my thoughts are, but we have those moments and that was the one song that he didn’t really play for me until the last minute, and it meant a lot to me. I really like that song. But yeah, we have different views sometimes, but that’s my husband, you know?"

Issa may have made the dig at Kanye, but she only had nice things to say about Kim ahead of the awards show.

"I mean, there's no doubt that Kim K has influenced an entire fashion industry, an entire generation of women," she told ET's Nischelle Turner on the red carpet.
