Report: Uncle Fatally Shoots His 16-Year-Old Niece Before Killing Himself In Murder-Suicide

Police in the Poconos are investigating what appears to be a murder-suicide involving a 63-year-old man, Freddie Simmons, and his 16-year-old niece.

Blah.

Pocono Mountain Regional Police say that the man shot the teen several times, before turning the gun on himself. The deaths occurred in the same room of a home in Coolbaugh Township.

Officers were called to the Simmons' home around 8:30 PM on Friday night. At the scene, they discovered the female victim (who had been shot multiple times) and Simmons, who suffered a single gunshot wound to the head.

Before the shooting, Simmons allegedly penned a suicide note which said he was “taking the juvenile with him,” the Pocono Record reported.

Ugh.

Police are continuing their investigation.

Neighbors of the Simmons family were horrified and shocked that such a violent act took place in their community.

"I was told to get back in the house," a neighbor named Dereck Dailey told WFMZ. He lives two houses down from the home where the bodies were discovered and saw heavy police activity on the night of the incident.

"Just peaceful, calm people you would never assume that anything even close to this would occur," Dailey explained. "We're still somewhat confused and shocked and sad.”

Police say other family members were home at the time of the shooting; some even ran to the surrounding homes, in order to ask for help.

Official are not releasing the name of the 16-year-old victim in the case.

For whatever reason, this somewhat reminds us of another chilling story from a few months back.

A 27-year-old Connecticut man was accused of fatally shooting his 16-year-old girlfriend in the head, before getting into a car accident; Dominique Pittman was charged with the murder in connection with the death of Evalyce Santiago.

NBC Connecticut reported that family members of the teen victim claimed they had no idea the two were romantically involved.
"The factors that caused this tumultuous end are still under investigation and we’re hoping to resolve that shortly," Waterbury Police Deputy Chief Fernando Spagnolo stated during a news conference.

Francisco Rivera (the victim’s grandfather, who raised her) revealed Pittman and the victim’s aunt had several children together, WFSB noted.

"Nobody knows nothing until something happens. That’s when we all realize the tragedy. It was under our noses and we didn’t see it," Francisco shared.
Police found Santiago’s body in the wreckage of a crash in Waterbury. It seems that Santiago was in the passenger seat with three apparent gunshot wounds in the head.

Police claim Pittman was "visibly shaken" at the scene; he had some bumps and bruises.

School officials said Santiago was a student at Wilby High School, but had recently transferred from Crosby High School.

Police had shared that Pittman has also been charged with weapons violations, including carrying a pistol without a permit and weapons in a motor vehicle.
